Yes, Islam spread by this sword, but this sword was in the form of the Sufi Saints who won the hearts and minds of people.

In most countries no muslim army ever set foot but only Sufi saints went there and spread the message of Islam .Sufi saints always kept a distance from royal courts and politics.

This iron sword was only responsible for the increase in size of the Islamic state.

According to history, in many cases Muslim rulers were against non-Muslims converting in order to keep on receiving jizyah tax. Jizyah means a tax paid by non-Muslims in return for protection.
