Al-Quran

Surah-e-Hud

Translation of the meaning of the Quran, Surat Hud (Chapter 11), verse 36 to 47

In the name of Allah, the Beneficent, the Merciful

It was revealed to Noah: "None of thy people will believe except those who have believed already! So grieve no longer over their (evil) deeds. (36) "But construct an Ark under Our eyes and Our inspiration, and address Me no (further) on behalf of those who are in sin: for they are about to be overwhelmed (in the Flood)." (37) Forthwith he starts constructing the Ark: every time that the Chiefs of his People passed by him, they threw ridicule on him. They threw ridicule on him. He said: "If ye ridicule us now, we (in our turn) can look down on you with ridicule likewise! (38) "But soon will ye know who it is on whom will descend a Penalty that will cover them with shame on whom will be unloosed a Penalty lasting." (39) At length behold! There came Our Command, and the fountains of the earth gushed forth! We said: "Embark therein of each kind two, male and female, and your family except those against whom the Word has already gone forth and the Believers." But only a few believed with him. (40) So he said: "Embark ye on the Ark in the name of Allah, whether it move or be at rest! For my Lord is, be sure, Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful!" (41) So the Ark floated with them on the waves (towering) like mountains, and Noah called out to his son, who had separated himself (from the rest): "O my son! Embark with us, and be not with the Unbelievers!" (42) The son replied: "I will be take myself to some mountain: it will save me from the water." Noah said: "This day nothing can save, from the Command of Allah, any but those on whom He hath mercy!"― and the waves came between them, and the son was among those overwhelmed in the Flood. (43) When the word went forth: "O earth! swallow up thy water, and O sky! withhold (thy rain)!" and the water abated, and the matter was ended. The Ark rested on Mount Judi, and the word went forth: "Away with those who do wrong!" (44) And Noah called upon his Lord and said: "O my Lord! surely my son is of my family! and Thy promise is true and Thou art the Justest of Judges!" (45) He said: "O Noah! he is not of thy family: for his conduct is unrighteous. So ask not of Me that of which thou hast no knowledge! I give thee counsel, lest thou become one of the ignorant!" (46) Noah said: "O my Lord! I do seek refuge with Thee from asking Thee for that of which I have no knowledge. And unless Thou forgive me and have Mercy on me, I should indeed be lost!" (47) The word came: "O Noah! come down (from the Ark) with Peace from Us, and Blessings on thee and on some of the Peoples (who will spring) from those with thee: but (there will be other) Peoples to whom We shall grant their pleasures (for a time), but in the end will a grievous Penalty reach them from Us."

Location of Mount Judi [1] [2]

Located in the northeast corner of Turkey is Mount Ararat. Mount Ararat is close to the borders of Iran and Armenia (formerly Soviet Union). This location does not provide a hospitable environment for an exploratory search for Noah's Ark[3]. There are friendly shepherds which live on the mountain. The mountain provides their sustenance through pure mountain water, valley crops and the herds of sheep and goats that they keep.

Did you know that Mount Ararat is a volcano and experienced a serious earthquake in 1840? Also, we call the mountain: Ararat but the Qur'an calls the location Mount Judi (XI. 44). Are these two different places? Local people call it Agri Dagh which means Mountain of Pain.

According to the Bible account in the book of Genesis, Noah's Ark came to rest over 4300 years ago on the mountains of Ararat. Based upon the information which gathered, Noah's Ark does exist on Mount Ararat also known as Mount Judi by some Muslim scholars. It has been preserved all of these years by the hand of God and exists the ice fields on Ararat.

The actual Mount Judi is 200 miles south of Mount Ararat in southern Turkey. The following is taken from the article by Bill Crouse in Archaeology and Biblical Research,Noah's Ark: Its Final Berth Vol. 5, No. 3. Summer, 1992.

Cudi Dagh is located approximately 200 miles south of Mt. Ararat in southern Turkey almost within eyesight of the Syrian and Iraqi borders.11 The Tigris River flows at its base. The exact co-ordinates are 37 degrees, 21 minutes N., and 42 degrees, 17 minutes E. In literature it has also been called "Mt Judi", "Mt. Cardu", "Mt. Quardu", "the Gordyene mountains", "Gordian mountains", "The Karduchian mountains", "the mountains of the Kurds", and to the Assyrians: "Mt.Nipur. It is also important to note that at times this mountain has even been called "Mt. Ararat".

At about 7000 feet altitude it is not a terribly high mountain, though it is snow-capped most of the year. The current edition of the ENCYCLOPEDIA OF ISLAM lists it as "over 13,000 feet and largely unexplored." We are unsure of the exact altitude, but it seems strange that it would not be noted on our modern aerial navigation map if it were 13,000 feet!

Most modern maps do not show the location of Cudi Dagh. It is, however, located about 25 miles from the Tigris River just east of the present Turkish city of Gizre and still within the bounds of the Biblical region of Ararat (Urartu).

Cudi Dagh overlooks the all-important Mesopotamian plain and is notable for its many archaeological ruins in and around the mountain. There are also many references to it in ancient history.13 Sennacherib (700 B.C.), the Assyrian king, carved rock reliefs of himself on the side of the mountain.14 The Nestorians (a sect of Christianity) built several monasteries around the mountain including one on the summit called "The Cloister of the Ark". It was destroyed by lightning in 766 A.D.15 The Muslims later built a mosque on the site. In 1910, Gertrude Bell explored the area and found a stone structure still at the summit with the shape of a ship called by the locals "Sefinet Nebi Nuh" "The Ship of Noah". Bell also reports that annually on September 14, Christians, Jews, Muslims, Sabians and Yezidis gather on the mountain to commemorate Noah's sacrifice.16 As late as 1949 two Turkish journalists claimed to have seen the Ark on this mountain, a ship 500 feet in length

In 1988, Vendyl Jones took actual measurements, showing the 'vessel' to be 515 feet long and 139 feet wide [which goes against the Biblical 50 cubits in width, which would have measured about 86 feet]. It also rests at an altitude of 7000 feet, near the village of Uzengili and immediately below the mountain of Al Judi, named in the Koran as the resting place of the Ark. Round about lie huge stones with holes carved at one end, said to be 'drogue stones' dragged behind ancient ships to stabilize them. David Fasold also reported that 'radar imagery at about 75 feet down from the stern is so clear that you can count the floor- boards between the walls.'
